The passing of Norman Mailer
When I was a kid I asked my grandfather what it had been like to fight in the Pacific during World War Two. He sort of avoided the question and then told me there were no words to describe it, but that I could start with "The Naked and the Dead" by Norman Mailer. I read it and had whole new respect for my grandfather...
Mailer was 84 and just as rascally and skeptical as ever when he passed away.
